Social control for adulteries in The Scarlet Letter Novel

          Social control theory proposes that people’s relationships, commitments, values, norms, and beliefs encourage them not to break the law. Thus, if moral codes are internalized and individuals are tied into, and have a stake in their wider community, they will voluntarily limit their propensity to commit deviant acts.

We can see there are social control in story “The Scarlet Letter” Novel. ‘The scarlet letter’ Letter created by Natahaniel Hawthone (1804-1864) which tells about a forbidden love between a wife of a doctor, whose name Hester Pryne and a minister, whose name Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester was a wife who solitude because his husband left her, then he met Arthur Dimmesdale who suddenly came to her life and gave her some special attention, then finally they fell in love. They committed to adultery. But, then they had a problem when Hester was pregnant. It was like moral burden for Arthur Dimmesdale who was a ministry in Church, who was considered as pure people whereas he did adultery with a women.

Moreover, they lived with puritans. Puritans is grouping of people who were blocked from changing the established church from within, and severely restricted in England by laws controlling the practice of religion. In puritan era, adultery was very shameful, moreover it was done by the ministry in the Church itself. Even, Hester Pryne preferred to protect the ministry by hiding his identity, but it also moral depressed for the ministry.

Social control in the Scarlet letter novel, we could see the condition of the society in the area. First, they did not believe young people to hold authority. Then, when Hester had given birth her baby, she also did not believe that she could grow up her baby, but Hester wanted to grow up her own baby by herself. Second, then when the society knew that Hester did adulteries, here the society took the control. The punishment for Hester was like psychologist punishment. Hester had to wear a Letter ‘A’,which means ‘adulteries’. When someone who wear that sign the one would be mocked, would be gossiped, would be talked by people everywhere, and the society expelled her. The punishment was not physically but mentality.

So, then because of the social control in puritan era in the Novel scarlet Letter was realized by the punishment which was given to Hester, it was like psychologist punishment or mental punishment for people who has done adulteries.
