I Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman family that lived in a beach of Sumatra island. The family consisted of a father, a mother and a boy whose name Malin Kundang. The father decided to go for working by sailing an ocean to across island; it was because of the apprehensive economic condition.
Therefore, Malin Kundang just lived with his mother in their house. Time was running, a week, two weeks, a month, two months, it had been more than one year the father had not gone home yet. Until, the mother had to work to replace father’s position. Malin was a smart boy but he was also naughty. He often chased a chicken, then hit the chicken with a broom. One day, when Malin Kundang was chasing a chicken, he fell and his right arm was wounded by a stone. The wound would be a permanent scar.
Malin was growing up, Malin compassionated to his mother who worked very hard for rearing him. He thought he wanted to work across country. He wished he could be rich man when came back. Malin was interested in a captain of merchant ship’s invitation whom had succeed to be rich man.
Malin expressed his intention to his mother. In the first time, she didn’t agree with him, but Malin kept urging her; finally his mother agreed though not in full heart. After preparing some supplies and equipment sufficiently, his mother accompanied Malin went to the ship. “My son, if you have succeed and become rich, don’t forget to your mother and your hometown.” Said the mother with tears.
The ship was getting far away, his mother waved her hand to convoy Malin’s leave. On the ship, Malin learnt more about seamanship to experienced crew. In the middle of the cruise, the ship suddenly was attacked by pirates. All commodities in the ship were deprived by the pirates. Even most of the crew and all people in the ship were killed by the pirates. Malin Kundang was lucky, he was not killed by the pirates, because when it was happening, he hid in a small room which was covered by wood.
Malin Kundang was floating in the middle of the sea in the ship, until the ship was ashore in a beach. With his remaining power, he walked to a nearest village from the beach. Arriving in the village, he got a helping hand from the society after he told what happened to him. The village was a prosperous village. Eventually, with his great effort Malin Kundang became rich man. He had a lot of merchant ships with big numbers of crew who were more than 100 people. After he was rich, he married a girl.
News about Malin Kundang who had been rich and got married had been heard by his mother. Malin Kundang’s mother felt to thank and felt very happy because her child had succeed. Since the time, Malin Kundang’s mother went to dock every day to see her child that might be come back.
After long married, Malin and his wife voyaged by the beautiful big ship many crew. Malin Kundang’s mother waited for her child every day. Then, she saw a beautiful ship docked. She saw there were two people who were standing on the deck. She believed that the ones who were standing at there were Malin Kundang and his wife.
Malin Kundang dropped from the ship. He was welcomed by his mother. After they were quite close, the mother saw the scar on Malin Kundang’s right arm, therefore she increasingly convinced that he was Malin Kundang. “Malin Kundang, my son, why did you leave so long time without informing me?”, said the mother while embracing Malin Kundang. But, what did happen then? Malin Kundang pulled back his mother and pushed her made she fell. “You are fuck woman! Don’t concede as my mother,” said Malin Kundang toward his mother. Malin Kundang pretended to not recognize her; he was shameful because his mother was old and wore ragged clothe.
“Is the woman your mother?”, Malin Kundang’s wife asked. “No! He is just a beggar that pretended as if she was my mother to get my money”, Malin Kundang said to his wife. The mother heard what he said and she got bad treatment from her son, so, Malin Kundang’s mother lost her temper. She did not suspect that her son would be rebellious. She was furious then Malin Kundang’s mother praid to God, “God, if he is really my son, I curse him to be a stone.” Not too long, the wind roared and violent storm came and destroyed Malin Kundang’s ship. After that, time by time, Malin Kundang’s body was getting to be a coral reef.
